Silva, Gerald R. “Jerry” -Of Reading, passed away on January 25th in the presence of family and friends, just shy of his 76th year and 19th Leap Day birthday. Survived by his beloved wife of 51 years, Carol (Ceruolo). Loving father of Gina and her husband Andrew Herlihy of Reading. Adoring grandfather of Dylan and Aidan Herlihy.
Born in Melrose, Jerry was a member of the American Legion Post 62 in Reading, active in the St. Athanasius Choir and Senior Echos Choir in North Reading. Jerry proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps, earning the rank of Sergeant E-5, seeing combat in Da Nang during the Vietnam War. He spent his career as a skilled four-color pressman in the printing industry, and always had a keen eye for color. Jerry remained close to his and Carol’s Saugus High School roots, and enjoyed the company of many friends from that time in addition to many other friends he made over the decades. A good high school athlete and football player, as well as an avid Boston sports fan, his greatest joy was spending time with friends and his family, especially his grandsons. He was handy and enjoyed working in the yard or around the house when not watching John Wayne films or historical documentaries.
Funeral from the Funeral Home on Thursday, Jan. 30th at 9:30am. Funeral Mass in St. Athanasius Church, 300 Haverhill St., Reading at 10:30am. Relatives and friends may visit at the funeral home Wednesday from 4pm-8pm. Interment Charles Lawn Cemetery, Reading. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jerry’s name to his favorite charity to which he volunteered, Angel Flight NE., 492 Sutton St., North Andover, MA 01845.
