MacDonald, Royal Marsh MacDonald, Jr. of Andover, MA passed away peacefully at High Point Hospice House on August 28, 2020, in Haverhill. He was 84 years old, the son of the late Royal and Gertrude MacDonald of Wakefield. He and his wife, Joan (Erickson) MacDonald had been married for 57 years. They raised two children, Tom MacDonald and his wife Pam of North Reading and Judy Webel and her husband Jon of Falmouth, ME. Royal had six grandchildren, Stephen, Thomas, Jonathan Patrick, Daniel Webel, Jared, and Katelyn MacDonald.
Royal grew up in Wakefield and after graduating from Wakefield High School he joined the army and served three years in Germany during the Korean War. Returning home he attended Boston University, working part-time at National Cash Register Company. Upon graduating he began working full time for NCR in the Sales Dept. His success there led to promotions which later required a moved to Syracuse NY. He loved Boston’s sports teams especially Boston University Hockey team; he and Joan hardly missed a home game. After two years in Syracuse and another move in the offing, he decided to return to Boston where he started his own successful printing company, Standard Office Systems. His love of hockey led to coaching in the North Reading Youth Hockey program and Brooks School.
He was a member of Andover Country Club, he enjoyed many years of golf and later spirited card games. Royal always liked to dance and he and Joan attended ballroom dances two or even three nights a week, something they both found a fun experience not only for the exercise but also for forming new friendships. As much as he enjoyed these activities what brought him the most joy in life was seeing and hearing of the many accomplishments of his six grandchildren.
A celebration of Royal’s life will be held for family and friends at a later date.
